Which Moon Is The Coldest?

On Neptune's largest moon, it gets so cold that the air itself freezes and falls to the ground as nitrogen snow. Surface temperatures there sink to about minus 391 degrees Fahrenheit, one of the lowest readings ever taken anywhere in the solar system. That is colder than distant Pluto, even though Pluto orbits nearly a billion miles farther from the Sun. And yet this frozen moon is not dead. Voyager 2 caught it firing geysers of nitrogen gas miles into the sky, and scientists still cannot fully explain how the coldest world ever measured manages to erupt at all.

Triton has the coldest surface anywhere in the solar system. But the single coldest spot ever recorded on any moon is not on Triton at all. It sits in permanent shadow on Earth's own Moon, barely 240,000 miles away.

Triton: The Coldest World Ever Measured

When NASA's Voyager 2 swept past Neptune in 1989, it turned its instruments toward Triton and recorded a surface hovering near 38 kelvin, roughly minus 391 degrees Fahrenheit. To put that in perspective, the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth, in Antarctica, was a comparatively balmy minus 128 degrees Fahrenheit. Triton is more than 250 degrees colder than that.

No other object in the solar system has ever shown a colder average surface. Triton is so frozen that most of its nitrogen has settled onto the ground as bright frost, a shell of ice that gleams like a mirror.

Two things freeze Triton. First, it orbits Neptune, which is nearly 3 billion miles from the Sun, so it receives about 900 times less sunlight than Earth does. From its surface, the Sun would look like nothing more than an unusually bright star.

Second, Triton reflects almost all of the faint light it does receive. Its icy surface bounces back up to 95 percent of the sunlight that reaches it, so barely any warmth ever soaks in. Almost none of the Sun's heat is absorbed, and the little that lands is thrown back into space.

Here is where Triton turns strange. Despite being the coldest world ever measured, it is not dead. Voyager 2 spotted plumes of nitrogen gas erupting miles into the sky, dark geysers powered by faint solar warmth thawing the ice just beneath the surface.

In other words, one of the most frozen places in the solar system is also one of the few that is still geologically active. Scientists are still working out exactly how a world this cold keeps erupting.

The Twist Is That Our Own Moon Holds the Coldest Spot

Triton has the coldest overall surface, but the record for the single lowest temperature ever measured on a moon belongs to a far more familiar place, Earth's very own Moon.

Near the lunar poles sit deep craters whose floors have not seen sunlight in billions of years. The towering crater rims block the Sun forever, creating pockets of permanent darkness. In 2009, NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter measured temperatures inside these shadowed craters as low as about 26 kelvin (minus 413 degrees Fahrenheit), with some spots estimated to be even colder.

That reading is genuinely astonishing. Those lunar craters are colder than the surface of distant Pluto, which sits billions of miles farther from the Sun. NASA's Diviner team identified the floor of the Moon's Hermite Crater as the coldest temperature measured anywhere in the solar system.

It means the coldest known spot anyone could ever stand on is not in the far reaches of deep space. It is on the same Moon visible from any backyard.

Triton and Earth's Moon lead the pack, but the solar system is full of frozen worlds.

Saturn's giant moon Titan sits at about minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit, cold enough that rivers of liquid methane carve its surface where water never could. Enceladus, another moon of Saturn, is near minus 330 degrees Fahrenheit, yet a warm ocean lies beneath its icy crust. And Charon, Pluto's largest moon, averages about minus 364 degrees Fahrenheit, colder than either of the moons of Saturn. Charon has no atmosphere to spread the Sun's warmth, so its temperature swings sharply between its lit and shadowed sides, though on average it is among the coldest moons ever measured.

Could a Spacecraft Survive There?

Forget people. These temperatures are punishing even for machines. The only reason Voyager 2 could study Triton at all is that it did not depend on the Sun for warmth. Each Voyager carries nine radioisotope heater units, pellets of plutonium no bigger than a pencil eraser that give off a steady trickle of heat, along with the generators that keep the craft running. Without them, the electronics would have frozen solid long before reaching Neptune.

The greater danger is not the circuitry but the fuel. Engineers still run thermal models of the aging Voyagers before switching any system on or off, checking that the propellant lines will not freeze. At these distances, a single bad call can turn a working probe into a lifeless one.

The Moon's shadowed craters are harder still. The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter measured them from orbit, at a safe distance, and never had to descend into the deep freeze. No spacecraft has ever operated on the floor of one. At roughly 26 kelvin, only a few dozen degrees above absolute zero, batteries drain, moving parts seize, and most electronics simply freeze and never wake up. Engineers designing rovers for the lunar south pole treat every watt of heat as precious. Surviving the cold without a nuclear heat source can demand hundreds of kilograms of extra batteries, a penalty that quickly swamps a rover's mass budget.

So, the honest answer is this. A spacecraft can fly past these frozen worlds, and even circle them, but landing on the very coldest spots and living long enough to send data home is a challenge engineers have yet to solve.

So, Which Moon Is the Coldest?

The answer depends on how it is measured. For the coldest world overall, Triton ranks first, an entire moon frozen to nearly minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit. For the single coldest place ever recorded, the shadowed craters of Earth's own Moon take the title, colder than Pluto and only a few dozen degrees above the coldest temperature the universe will allow.

Either way, the lesson is the same. Some of the most extreme cold in the solar system is not in an unreachable corner of deep space. A piece of it circles Earth every single night.
